General Background: Conventional lathe turning processes remain widely utilized across manufacturing industries and educational workshops due to their operational simplicity and flexibility. Specific Background: The quality of turned components heavily depends on the condition of the cutting tools used, where tool wear during cutting operations reduces workpiece surface quality. Knowledge Gap: Existing practices often lack comprehensive quantification regarding how varying spindle speeds and feed rates accelerate mass loss and surface degradation in conventional setups. Aims: This study aims to analyze the effect of high-speed steel tool wear on surface roughness during conventional lathe operations using varying spindle speeds and constant feed rates. Results: The findings indicate that tool wear increases proportionally with higher spindle speeds and larger feed rates, directly resulting in higher workpiece surface roughness. Novelty: This research provides an accessible evaluation of mass-loss tool wear utilizing two distinct feed rates across multiple spindle speeds without requiring microscopic equipment. Implications: Monitoring tool wear and optimizing cutting parameters are vital for maintaining machining precision and industrial productivity.
Key Findings Highlights
- Tool wear values increase significantly alongside higher spindle speeds due to elevated cutting temperatures and friction.
- Larger feed rates induce greater cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear compared to smaller feed rates.
- Advanced tool wear directly diminishes cutting stability, producing rougher workpiece surfaces.
