Abstract

General Background The paper production industry relies heavily on sequential processing stages, where the drying phase is vital for achieving desired moisture levels, material ductility, and surface quality. Specific Background Dryer operations utilize heating systems and rotating drums to evaporate moisture from newly produced materials, requiring consistent temperature and ventilation control. Knowledge Gap Despite their critical role, these systems frequently experience operational disruptions due to unaddressed minor faults, which can lead to severe mechanical failures and suboptimal production if not properly managed. Aims This study investigates the common causes of equipment degradation and formulates systematic handling procedures to minimize operational downtime. Results Utilizing qualitative observation and interview methods over a 30-day period at a manufacturing facility, the research identifies five primary causes of physical damage: overheating, component wear, corrosion, transmission belt failure, and bearing degradation. Furthermore, the study delineates seven essential handling protocols, including scheduled inspections, precise lubrication, regular cleaning, timely component replacement, heating system monitoring, accurate temperature calibration, and comprehensive operator training. Novelty This research provides a structured, site-specific fault identification and handling framework tailored directly to industrial paper manufacturing operations. Implications Executing these targeted, scheduled handling protocols secures continuous production flow, preserves high material quality, and significantly reduces the risk of mechanical breakdowns.

Highlights:

  • Qualitative observation at a manufacturing facility revealed overheating, corrosion, wear, and bearing degradation as primary operational disruptions.

  • Implementing scheduled inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and system calibration mitigates equipment failures.

  • Comprehensive operator training combined with routine component replacement secures continuous production flow and consistent material quality.
